Hailo, the app that dispatches licensed D.C. taxis to your location, will give away free cab rides tomorrow.
Each promo code – HailoLovesDC, HailoLovesDC1 and HailoLovesDC2 – is worth a $20 credit, which will likely cover most rides. The offer is part of the two-part Taxi Driver Appreciation Day, which celebrates the end of the government shutdown. Today is day one, when drivers can get a free wash for their vehicles at Mr. Car Wash (1311 13th Street NW) until 6 p.m.
According to Hailo, local drivers suffered a 30 to 35 percent decline in business, which translates to a more than $3 million loss in revenue. A public relations representative for the company explained where that number came from:
According to the D.C. Taxicab Commission, on average 25 million taxi rides are taken in D.C. each year and the average fare is $12.50. Based on Hailo’s own data, they were able to see a 30 to 35 percent decrease in rides during the 16 days of the shutdown. Hailo used these numbers to determine the amount of revenue lost.
The company does not disclose the number of drivers who use their app.
DCTC spokesperson Neville Waters wasn’t able to confirm these numbers, saying “we would not be able to provide accurate data at this point.” He added that they expect to have reliable trip date next year through the Modern Taximeter System.
