On Monday, Mayor Vince Gray will sign a bill that will allow undocumented residents to obtain special driver’s licenses, according to a news release.
The Drivers Safety Amendment Act of 2013 will allow the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue a driver’s license, learner’s permit, or identification card to undocumented D.C. residents. When it becomes law, D.C. will join ten other states that also allow undocumented residents to get a driver’s license or identification card.
Members from 32BJ SEIU—the largest property service workers union in the U.S.—will join Mayor Gray and members of the D.C. Council for the signing. “As House Republicans continue to block civil rights for aspiring Americans, District leaders are breaking down barriers by helping thousands of DC residents lead a more productive life,” said 32BJ SEIU Vice President Jaime Contreras in a press release. “Allowing immigrants to legally drive their kids to school, go to church and to the doctor will strengthen our economy and keep us all safer.”
According to a study conducted by the AAA Foundation, unlicensed drivers are five times more likely to be in a fatal car accident and this bill will help address that problem, as well as the hope that it will help increase the “willingness of immigrant witnesses and victims to cooperate with law enforcement officers” in criminal investigations.
The bill is not exactly what some immigration advocates were looking for, as the licenses will read “not valid for official federal purposes.”
