It’s been nearly seven weeks since the organizers of the traveling hip hop festival, Rock the Bells, pulled the plug on the D.C. dates a mere two days before it was scheduled to happen at RFK Stadium. Now, Chang Weisberg, founder of Guerilla Union, which organizes the festival, has come out to speak about that of which we already know: That Rock the Bells was canceled due to lack of ticket sales.
“We were really trying to pull off D.C.,” Weisberg says in a video posted on Youtube. “There was a lot of great shows that were out touring in our same time period, that could be a factor — the fact that Jay-Z was on sale, the fact that Kanye was on sale, the fact that Drake was on sale. There were just a lot of great hip-hop shows, and I wish all of them well.” Weisberg says that they maybe should have just made it one day, rather than two, and he takes responsibility for that.
So, is this the end of Rock the Bells? Hopefully not. Weisberg says that he and his team are working hard to bring the festival back again next year.
