Because of a huge influx in pets, the Washington Humane Society is waiving all adoption fees through Christmas Eve. That’s right: All fees on all animals.
“In just the last 48 hours the Washington Humane Society (WHS) New York Avenue Adoption Center took in 26 dogs surrendered by their owners before the holidays,” a release states. “Sadly, this time of year is often a time when more animals are brought to WHS as families look for housing options for pets during winter vacations, or because they can’t afford the costs of their care.”
WHS spokesperson ChristieLyn Diller says animals are currently being house in every corner of the facilities, even in offices. They’re hoping this offer will encourage anyone considering getting a pet to adopt.
Both the Georgia Avenue and New York Avenue facilities will be open until 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve. While fees on dogs are being waived, adopters must purchase a $15 license. All potential adopters will still be screened, naturally, and all pets go home spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.
