News flash: Christmas is Wednesday. As in this Wednesday. As in less than two days from now.
If you are me, then you have purchased approximately zero gifts for the several people in your life who are expecting them. It’s basically too late to order something from the Internet, and, because you love yourself, going to a mall is not an option.
Below are a few options for last minute gifts. Other ideas can be sent to tips@dcist.com.
For the foodie (ugh) in your life, Union Market will be open until 6 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow. Olive oil! Knives! SMALL BATCH PANTRY GOODS! Get a basket, fill it with some delicious stuff and call it a gift. Or, if you’re boring, they also sell gift cards.
For stationary, home and kitchen items and various geegaws, Pulp will be open on Christmas Eve until 3 p.m., Home Rule will be open until 4 p.m. and Hill’s Kitchen will be open until 6 p.m., unless things are slow. That’s me telling you to call ahead.
If you are friends with non-jerks, a charitable donation is a good option. There are way too many worth-while ones to list here, so check out the City Paper’s guide.
Giving a pet as a gift is an extremely serious decision that should not be taken lightly. But! If you’re shopping for your own child who has been drawing pictures of kittens and taking her stuffed animals for walks, consider adopting an animal from the Washington Humane Society. Adoption fees have been waived until Christmas Eve and the shelters will be open until 5 p.m. If a dog or cat is too big of a commitment, there’s also a rabbit and guinea pig up for adoption.
Booze is an obvious, but always welcome gift in my household. Schneider’s of Capitol Hill will be open until 4 p.m. tomorrow, while d’vines will be open until 5 p.m.
Lottery tickets. Because you’re someone’s uncle who doesn’t care about math and lives near a convenience store.
