The D.C. area is expected to be smacked in the face with six to ten inches of snow tonight through tomorrow, therefore the federal and District governments are closed.

The National Weather Service says the temperatures will fall from the lower 30s around midnight to the mid-20s late tonight: “Rain changes to freezing rain and sleet from north to south after midnight tonight, then becomes heavy snow late tonight and continuing through Monday.” Capital Weather Gang predicts “the worst of the storm is expected from roughly 4 a.m. to 10 a.m.”

D.C. has declared a snow emergency, which will begin at 7 a.m. Monday. This means people should not park their vehicle in the snow emergency route. During the last snow storm, the city handed out $263,000 in fines for tickets and towing, so do not ignore this advice. Mayor Vince Gray’s State of the District Address has been postponed until March 11.

Metro has already suspended bus service for the morning and MetroAccess service for all of Monday. Update: At just after 10 a.m. Monday, Metro suspended bus service for the whole day.

WUSA9’s Russ Ptacek has dubbed this storm SnowmAgainden, which DCist whole heartedly endorses. While we like snow just fine, here’s hoping this is the last we see of it until next winter.
