From three finalists, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities has selected local artist Jackie L. Braitman’s interactive installation for the Chuck Brown Memorial Park.
The “Wind Me Up, Chuck” installation, the Takoma Park, Md. artist says in a release, will serve as a park-within-a-park that reflects Brown’s “force of personality” and “echoes the ‘call and response’ inclusiveness of Go-Go music.” It will feature “three plate-steel figures representing Chuck Brown and two dancers placed on a concrete stage and dance floor, an interactive LED display, [and] sitting walls surrounding both the stage and the dance floor.”
“The challenge to the artist is to create a work of art that communicates a multidimensional musician in a public space,” Lionell Thomas, DCCAH’s Executive Director, said in a release. “Artist Jackie L. Braitman responded with sculpture and designs that encourage the viewer to experience Chuck Brown’s multiple contributions.”
Construction on the Chuck Brown Memorial Park, located within Langdon Park in Northeast D.C., began last year. It’s scheduled to be dedicated in August.
