After yesterday’s brief but intense rainstorm, temperatures cooled down a bit; the high temperature was 61 degrees. And right now it’s pleasantly warm out. But don’t get used to the balmy weather, because it’s going to get hot.

While the temperature in D.C. is currently flirting around the mid 70’s, it’s steadily going to rise throughout the day, with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s, according to the National Weather Service. The Capital Weather Gang says that “a few spots southwest of town could even flirt with 90,” but also says that’s an aggressive prediction.

Still, a high of 86 degrees in the beginning of May is unusually high. And with the humidity at 60 percent, it will certainly feel hot. The record high for May 8 in D.C. is 92 degrees, which occurred in 1932, and the average high temperature is 72 degrees. And if you look at the temperature history for the month of May, the record high his 95 degrees, while the average high is a comfortable 75 degrees.

So yes, today’s temperature spike is unusual, especially given this is what we were writing about a little more than three weeks ago.
