Looks like the Washington Monument will have some competition for “tallest building in the D.C. area” soon. The Post reports that Capital One has received approval to build a new headquarters near Tysons Corner, and it’s going to be tall. Arrogantly tall, some would say. From the Post:
Capital One, led by chairman, president and chief executive Richard D. Fairbank, drew up the tallest commercial building in the Washington area. At 470 feet, it would be the second tallest structure in the area, behind only the Washington Monument (555 feet).
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the project Tuesday evening, with minimal fanfare.
The original plan for the campus of the company’s new headquarters was 26 acres, including 3.1 million square feet of office space, four high-rise residential buildings, and 100,000 square feet of retail and dining space. It’s not clear when the new mammoth building will be complete—The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the project on Tuesday—but it’ll certainly stick out among the relatively low D.C.-area skyline, of which there is a famously strict height limit. If you have an issue with a tall building being 23 miles from the Monument, please direct all complaints to Capital One.
