The Metropolitan Police Department have arrested and charged a suspect in connection to the shooting of an off-duty detective.
According to MPD, 27-year-old Romeo Hayes was arrested yesterday and charged with assault with intent to kill. Early yesterday morning, an off-duty detective with the MPD was shot in the 4100 block of Southern Avenue SE at about 3 a.m. after Hayes and two other suspects driving around in a burgundy Nissan Altima attempted to carjack his vehicle. When the detective attempted to flee in his vehicle, they opened fire on him, hitting him several times.
Details about the incident were initially murky, but the Post reports that before the MPD detective was shot, Hayes and the two other suspects confronted another off-duty officer at about 2:45 a.m. near the intersection of Alabama Avenue and Suitland Parkway SE. Shots were fired, but no one was hit, according to police. Fifteen minutes later, the suspects tried to carjack the detective’s vehicle and shot him when he tried to flee.
Shortly after the suspects fled in their Altima, they were picked up by Prince George’s County police, who arrested one of the suspects after their vehicle crashed. Two others fled and police are still searching for them. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 202-727-9099 or 911. MPD is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest.
