Local officials will gather near the Washington Navy Yard tomorrow evening to mark the one-year anniversary of a shooting that claimed 12 lives.
Mayor Vincent Gray, Vice Admiral William Hilarides and Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) will attend a remembrance ceremony in Canal Park at 6 p.m. Hilarides is the commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command; its headquarters, located inside the Navy Yard, was targeted by a gunman in September 2013. “The memorial service will include prayers, readings, meditation, and music to honor the victims, survivors, families, and heroic civilian and military first responders that acted to save lives one year ago,” according to Near Southeast Community Partners, the group hosting the event.
Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier will take part in an event Wednesday at George Washington University to discuss the response to the shooting and how future events can be prevented. A Department of Defense report on the tragedy revealed that it may have been preventable.
