Already under a hypothermia alert, D.C. will declare a cold emergency at 7 p.m. to provide additional warming sites to people in need.

In addition to cold weather shelters and overflow shelters made available when a hypothermia alert is issued, the city will open three warming centers as temperatures dip to 19 degrees with the wind chill:

Sherwood Recreation Center
(640 10th Street NE)
Co-ed
Until 7 a.m.

Emery Recreation Center
(5801 Georgia Avenue NW)
Men
Until 7 a.m.

Guy Mason Recreation Center
(3600 Calvert Street NW)
Women
Until 7 a.m.

“During what is predicted to be dangerously cold weather, I encourage all to be mindful of persons who might need shelter,” Mayor Vincent Gray said. “I am confident District agencies will take every step possible to ensure the safety of our residents in need.”
