Wards 4 and 8 are home to elections tomorrow to respectively fill Muriel Bowser and Marion Barry’s open seats on the D.C. Council.
Special elections are notorious for low turnouts—which means your vote may very well make the difference. In fact, it wouldn’t be the first time a single vote has determined a special election in D.C. As a number of news outlets have noted in recent days, that is exactly what happened in the 1995 special election to replace Barry—yes, the same one—on the D.C. Council after he became mayor.
Haven’t been paying any attention? Some things to know:
- Both races have echoes of a repeat showdown between Bowser and former Mayor Vincent Gray, who have each endorsed different candidates.
- One of the dominant themes in both wards 4 and 8 has been Bowser’s ties to the presumed frontrunners, but no single opposition candidate has emerged in either race
- Petworth resident and blogger Drew Schneider has maintained a website with a comprehensive Q&A with the candidates running for the Ward 4 seat.
- A recent Washington City Paper cover story has a good overview of the Ward 8 race and the main candidates vying to step into Barry’s shoes.
- You can find your polling place here.
- The polls will be open tomorrow between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
- You should really vote.
