Get some virtual time in with the National Zoo’s fishing cats while you still can. It is one of five animal web cams that will go dark on June 1.
Before the masses have a panic attack, Bao Bao fans have nothing to fear. The panda cam will be spared from the purge, as will the elephant and lion cameras.
But some of the Zoo’s less hype-inducing creatures will no longer be under constant video surveillance—at least not the kind that you can watch from the comfort of your cubicle. The cams trained on naked mole rats, clouded leopards, orangutans, and Asian small-clawed otters will be taken offline on Monday.
The zoo cited old software as the reason and said that they are exploring “new technology and funding opportunities to expand online viewing in the future.”
