On Tuesday, the above video—depicting a police officer parked in a bike lane threatening a cyclist who was calling the cops to report it—surfaced. Naturally, it fueled a lot of outrage among the local Bike D.C. community. Greater Greater Washington’s Geoff Hatchard wrote that the officer’s “hostility indicates irreverence,” and suggested that “a more peaceful move for this ‘peace officer’ would have been to park the vehicle he was guarding in a designated parking space.”

The officer, it turns out, is a Delaware State Trooper and he was parked in the bike lane because, as Philadelphia’s Action News reports, he was assigned to protect Delaware Governor Jack Markell.

Unfortunately, that officer threatened the wrong cyclist. After the video spread throughout the Internet, the officer is now being investigated to see if he violated any policies.

“The Delaware State Police is aware of the video of a member of the Division,” Delaware State Police spokesman Richard Bratz tells DCist. “We will be conducting an internal investigation to determine if there have been any violations of our policies.”

Meanwhile, Governor Markell’s office released the following statement about the incident to Action News:

As an avid cyclist and governor of the third most Bicycle Friendly State in America, the Governor knows keeping bike lanes clear is critical to the safety of everyone on the road. He understands the concerns being expressed regarding yesterday’s incident in D.C., in which a State Trooper assigned to protect the Governor idled his vehicle in a bike lane while waiting for him to exit an event. Law enforcement officers must sometimes block lanes of traffic in order to do their job effectively and the Delaware State Police will be looking at how the officer handled this situation. The Governor appreciates all that our law enforcement officers do and trusts the Delaware State Police will handle their response to the incident appropriately.
