The National Weather Service has two alerts set for our region today: severe heat, followed by severe thunderstorms.

Temperatures are set to soar up to 99 degrees, but the heat index will make that feel closer to 105 degrees. NWS warns to take extra precautions when spending any time outside and drink extra water. Maybe don’t go running until the temperatures fall, all you exercise overachievers.

A city map shows the locations of of D.C.’s cooling centers, spray parks, and pools. And if you see someone in need of help, call the city hotline: 1-800-535-7252. The heat advisory remains in effect between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Sometime this afternoon, thunderstorms are set to arrive and cool things down—while potentially also wreaking havoc. Damaging wind gusts and large hail are the primary threats, according to NWS. Severe storms may return on Thursday, too.
