It is a truth universally acknowledged that a company in possession of a vacant lot must be in want of a pop-up.

NoMa’s Wunder Garten—located at 150 M St. NE—is a study in the process: find a cross-promotional partner, serve brews in glasses tall enough that you can name it a beer garden, call in the food trucks, and toss in some free events.

The 22,000-square-foot lot is slated to be developed by TIAA-CREF, which purchased it in November under the name The Flats 140 Residential LLC, according to the Washington Business Journal. But through the fall, Wunder Garten will be on the spot, serving (mostly) German beers and ushering in a rotating series of food trucks.

REI—which is planning a a 52,000-square-foot flagship store at the old Uline Arena down the block— got in on the action too, sponsoring a slate of free educational outdoor programs. Among the offerings: a running club, wilderness survival basics, camping knots, and yoga for athletes (with Yoga NoMa).
