In the wake of a series of violent incidents in Shaw, D.C. police have set up a “community outreach post” at 7th and O streets NW. Officers will be manning the tent 24/7 on the same block, near the Kennedy Recreation Center, where three people were shot earlier this week.
Officers who know the area will be available to answer questions, take reports and hand out pamphlets to “citizens ready to make positive changes in this community,” police said Lieutenant Deborah Pearce will be there between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. each day of this week through Saturday.
“The citizens of the District of Columbia and the dedicated officers of the Third District, working together, can end the violence and continue the progress that has been ongoing over the past several years,” Pearce wrote in a release.
In addition to the triple shooting, a woman was shot and killed near that intersection over Memorial Day weekend and there have been multiple violent robberies and other incidents in the area.
“When someone is shot the flood lights go up, maybe even a camera but after a couple of weeks it all goes away and the violence just comes back,” John Frederick, a neighbor who lives a block away, told WUSA9 after Tuesday’s shooting. “It’s all in a one block area.”
