Arlington is getting a new one-stop homeless shelter next week that will be open 24/7—the only shelter of its kind in the region.

The 50-bed, $9.68 million facility is located near the Courthouse Metro Station. Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network (A-SPAN) will eventually house agencies with caseworkers, job training, health-care services and mental illness and substance abuse treatment, according to The Washington Post. The Homeless Services Center is an important facility—there’s nothing quite like it in the area. In fact, the closest comparable facility is in New Jersey, officials say.

It will also be located next to some condo owners who are not happy about their new neighbors, though the shelter made many efforts to neutralize their concerns, including hiring security. This facility replaces a winter-only nighttime shelter two blocks away. Twenty condo owners next to the new Homeless Services Center, many of them strong opponents of the project, have sold their units over the past few years, according to the civic association president.

The Washington Post and ARLNow have more photos of the colorful facilities.
