The rains have yet to being in earnest, but Joaquin is already wreaking havoc on the region’s weekend plans. We’ll update this as more cancellations roll in.
Taste of Bethesda: “The Bethesda Urban Partnership, the downtown management organization that markets downtown Bethesda, has announced that Taste of Bethesda has been cancelled for 2015. The 26th annual Taste of Bethesda scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015 has been cancelled due to the inclement weather.” It won’t be rescheduled this year.
E-CARE: “Arlington County’s popular, bi-annual Environmental Collection and Recycling Event (E-CARE), set to happen this Saturday, Oct. 3, is being rescheduled due to inclement weather. The new event date is Saturday, Oct. 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 125 South Old Glebe Road. Due to the inconvenience, the County will be waiving the $20 recycling fee for televisions and $15 recycling fee for computer monitors.”
Maryland-Michigan game: “The Maryland-Michigan football game has been rescheduled for noon on Saturday, Oct. 3 due to the impending weather impact of Hurricane Joaquin. The game, which was originally scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff, will be televised on the Big Ten Network.”
Washington Football Team-Eagles: “NFL officials are in discussions with representatives of the [WFT] and Philadelphia Eagles about potential weather-related scheduling contingencies in case Hurricane Joaquin impacts the D.C. area this weekend. “We are monitoring the forecast and having dialogue with both teams,” said Greg Aiello, the NFL’s senior vice president of communications. Aiello declined to say what prospective scheduling changes are being discussed. Spokesmen for the Eagles and [WFT] declined to elaborate on potential rescheduling plans,” The Washington Post reports.
Fort Belvoir Oktoberfest: “Regrettably due to the inclement weather forecasted for Fort Belvoir and the entire Washington, D.C. area over the next several days, the Fort Belvoir Garrison Command has made the decision to cancel the 20th Annual Oktoberfest celebration, which was scheduled for this Thursday, October 1 through Sunday, October 4. This cancellation includes the Opening Ceremony for the German-American Military Forces Traditional Keg-Tapping scheduled for Friday evening.” It will not be rescheduled this year.
Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Autumn Conservation Festival: “With the declaration of a State of Emergency in Virginia due to Hurricane Joaquin, we have made the tough decision to cancel the Autumn Conservation Festival at SCBI this year. More information to come.”
Adams Morgan PorchFest: “The festival, which promised to fill Adams Morgan porches with street performers this weekend, will now take place on Oct. 24 between 2 and 6 p.m.,” Borderstan reports.
The Black Squirrel’s Smashing Pumpkin Beer Fest: Originally scheduled for Friday, the event has been rescheduled for October 9th. “Attention Peter, Peter pumpkin drinkers: The Black Squirrel’s Seventh Annual Smashing Pumpkin Beer Fest commences Friday, October 9th, starting at 5pm. Join the Squirrel for a night stuffed with all things pumpkin.”
Atlas Brew Works 2nd Anniversary Party: The festivities are still happening, but they have been moved indoors. “Forget the rain, we’ll be partying inside and it will be pouring awesome beer and music at this party! We’ll have a beer trailer with nothing but fresh Atlas brews, Cap Mac and Carnivore BBQ will be serving up their specialties and Bumper Jacksons, South Rail and Justin Trawick & The Common Good will take the stage for an afternoon of great live music. ”
Art in the Alley: “We have decided to postpone Art in the Alley 7 due to the bad weather forecast for Saturday. Rain and wind does not make for a good alley festival. New date is Friday October 16th. Stay tuned for more details/”
Meridian Pint’s Oktoberfest: “Joaquin has moved Oktoberfest inside! But that will not stop us from celebrating great beer and delicious food! Come on and join us inside where it’s warm and dry.”
Del Ray’s Art on the Avenue: ” Due to the forecast of severe weather including flooding rains and strong winds, It is with great disappointment to announce that Saturday’s 20th Annual Art on the Avenue is being postponed until October 10th.”
Maryland Ironman: “Due to projected flooding from abnormally high tides, heavy rain, wind, and the expected impact of Hurricane Joaquin, IRONMAN Maryland will not take place this Saturday … We are asking all athletes to not travel to Maryland since forecasts expect heavy weather impact in the area. We are tentatively planning and have tentative approval to have the race take place on Saturday, October 17; however, no final decision can be made until the effects of the storm are fully assessed.”
Race for Every Child: “We are sorry to announce that the Race for Every Child has been cancelled. The Children’s National staff and our partners have determined that the threat of heavy wind and rain could threaten the safety of participants. We are exploring future options for the event, and will be in touch with all participants by email with any updates, including when to expect your race t-shirt.”
