As you put the finishing touches on your Halloween costume keep in mind that no matter what you do, you’ll never be as cute as the creatures from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.

The Zoo is rightfully putting our money to work posting photos of its animals with pumpkins. Some of the creatures, like the primates, even get to eat the toasted seeds. The result is far better than anything Anne Geddes has done in the gourd photography genre.

Keepers at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute threw an impromptu #Halloween party for our red panda cubs Tianeseng and Sengdaed! Homemade decorations included these #ZooEnrichment pumpkins made of papier mache and filled with bamboo shoots (their favorite food). Did you know that orangutans and gorillas enjoy eating toasted pumpkin seeds? Every #Halloween for #ZooEnrichment, keepers carve pumpkins and then hide goodies—including toasted seeds—inside for the apes to investigate and enjoy. This food enrichment engages the apes’ sight, smell, and touch senses and encourages them to use their foraging behaviors just as they would in the wild!

Deep within this hollow ‪#‎Halloween pumpkin, keepers hide fruits to entice our wrinkled hornbills. In the wild, hornbills use their long beaks to pick fruit from trees. Happy #NationalCatDay! Our feisty fishing cats, Lek and Electra, don’t mess around when it comes to hunting fish. Keepers provide fish #ZooEnrichment for the animals, mimicking what the cats would experience in the wild and encouraging them to use their natural behaviors. Lek and Electra seem to enjoy playing in cardboard boxes, too. Then again, what cat doesn’t? Next time you’re at the Zoo, visit them on Asia Trail. #WeSaveSpecies
