Virginia McLaurin doesn’t let her age affect her service to the District. The 106-year-old woman, who famously danced her way to meet the Obamas last month, has volunteered daily with the United Planning Organization for over 20 years. In return, the organization is giving the energetic elder another reason to groove by throwing her a surprise birthday party with close friends, family, and some very special guests.

McLaurin will turn 107 years old on March 12. The celebration, dubbed “Let’s Dance,” will happen a day earlier at THEARC in Southeast.

McLaurin won the hearts of folks across the country after her White House video went viral last month. But she’s been considered family to children in D.C. for years, participating in UPO’s Foster Grandparent program. To celebrate her work with underserved children, her fellow colleagues, family, friends, and mentees are expected to pay tribute at the celebration with stories, performances, and more.

There’s also a growing list of national leaders who want to join the party, as well, says Angela Sikes of UPO. While they’re still in the process of confirming attendees, Mayor Muriel Bowser and some D.C. councilmembers and officials are expected to appear, Sikes says.

Despite her infectious glee, the longtime District resident has faced her share of hardships—including a bedbug infestation that lasted months. In response, friends who wanted to support McLaurin started a YouCaring.com page for her. Since launching on Tuesday, the page has raised more than $21,000 towards a goal of $50,000, which should give McLaurin one more reason to shake a leg.
