>> John Mayall is a giant of the British blues scene and in the ’60s his Bluesbreakers gave rise to many a rock legend, including Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Mick Fleetwood. Mayall plays and 8 p.m. show tonight at The Hamilton. Tickets $22.50-$32.

>> The Smithsonian American Art Museum‘s Kogod Courtyard will host the ongoing Take 5! concert series on Thursday. Vocalist Danielle Wertz and her band will explore the rich jazz legacy of Paris. 5 to 7 p.m. Free.

>> Joe Herrera is one of the area’s most in-demand trumpeters, playing with a number of different groups and co-directing the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra. He will be leading his own band on Thursday at Blues Alley. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $20 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> The Washington Women in Jazz Festival continues on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest with trombonist Shannon Gunn leading the area’s only all-female big band, The Bullettes. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

>> Vocalist Akua Allrich brings her excellent tribute to Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba to the Montpelier Arts Center on Friday. 8 p.m. Tickets $25.

>> Vocalist/trombonist Eric Felten leads a tribute to Mel Tormé on Friday at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club. 8 p.m. Tickets $25 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> D.C.’s jazz scene received a huge gift when bassist Tarus Mateen decided to relocate to the area a few years ago. His jazz credentials include Jason Moran’s trio, Terence Blanchard, and a host of others. He also spent several years playing sessions for a number of chart-topping R&B and hip-hop artists, including Outkast, The Roots, and The Fugees. Mateen will unveil his new trio, Arising Saints, on Friday at Bohemian Caverns. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $18 in advance/$23 at the door.

>> Chopteeth‘s blend of jazz, afrobeat, and funk have made the band an area mainstay for over a decade. The group will perform at The Hamilton on Friday. 8:30 p.m. Tickets $15-$20.

>> Veteran area trumpeter Thad Wilson will lead his group on Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> Mr. Henry’s hosts vocalists Anthony Compton (Friday) and Renee Tannenbaum (Saturday). 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.

>> Smooth jazz guitarist Peter White plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets from Friday through Sunday at Blues Alley. Tickets $37-$43 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> Parents who would like to introduce their kids to jazz should take note of Strathmore‘s Saturday Family Jazz Sessions. The six-session series, aimed at ages 4-10, allows junior jazz aficionados to spend Saturday mornings singing, playing, and preparing for a lifetime of jazz appreciation. The first event takes place this Saturday at 11 a.m. Tickets $9-$10 per session or three session packages are available for $24.

>> The Washington Women in Jazz Festival concludes on Saturday at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum. Area vocalist Jessica Boykin-Settles will walk the audience through the music and times of jazz legend Sarah Vaughan. 2 to 4 p.m. Free.

>> Marshall Keys has been one of the area’s top saxophonists for decades. He has assembled some of the DMV’s finest, including pianist Allyn Johnson and vocalist Christie Dashiell, for 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. Tickets $18 in advance/$23 at the door.

>> Virtuoso bassist Avon Lucas brings his band to the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club on Saturday.

>> Guitarist Pete Muldoon leads a band at the Jazz & Cultural Society on Sunday. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

>> This area’s rich experimental music scene surprises many outsiders. If there’s any act that personifies the depth of talent that lies therein, it’s Janel & Anthony. The cello/guitar duo of Janel Leppin and Anthony Pirog can go from abstract noise to haunting melody on a dime, and will keep the audience engaged throughout. They will be at Bohemian Caverns on Sunday for 7 and 8:30 p.m. sets. Tickets $15.

>> Drummer Vinson Valega is from this area, but now is based out of Minneapolis. He will be at Twins Jazz on Sunday for a homecoming of sorts. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> The Vibe Collective is dedicated to laying down the tight grooves and inventive improvisations that typified the Afro-Cuban music scenes of New York and San Francisco in the 1960s. They will be at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge on Sunday. 9:30 p.m. No cover.

>> Diego Figueiredo is considered among Brazil’s finest guitar players. He will play 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Monday at Blues Alley. Tickets $20 plus minimum and surcharge.

>> A buzz is starting to build around Tedd Baker‘s Tuesday night trio gigs at Jojo’s. His band’s set starts at 7:30 p.m. and a jam session follows.

>> Donato Soverio has been one of the area’s first-call guitarists for nearly 20 years. He will team up with two other excellent six-stringers with strong local ties, Paul Bollenback and Steve Herberman, for 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Tuesday at Blues Alley. Tickets $20 plus minimum and surcharge.
