More than ten people broke out the zip ties and attached them to the scaffolding inside the U.S. Capitol rotunda this afternoon.
“We the people demand a democracy free from the corrupting influence of big money and voter suppression,” the Democracy Spring group shouted. “We demand a democracy where every vote is counted and every voice is heard.”
According to activists, 13 people were took part in the action and another two were on site recording (they’ve been dubbed the #dome15). The protesters came in as part of a tour group. According to the U.S. Capitol Police, 12 people were arrested.
Following a 10-day walk from Philadelphia, a coalition of progressive groups has been taking part in sit-ins at the U.S. Capitol this week. Over the first four days of the Democracy Spring protests, more than 600 arrests have already been made. Additional arrests are expected at today’s events, which coincide with DC Vote’s Tax Day Protest and March for Equality. Actress Rosario Dawson and Harvard professor Lawrence Lessig have spoken to the gathered crowd.
