Bullfrog Bagels’ sandwich via via Facebook

SMOKED SALMON SANDWICH AT BULLFROG BAGELS: You’re entitled to all of the tradition with none of the kvetching relatives. Just point your culinary compass towards Bullfrog Bagels and gravitate to the smoked salmon bagel sandwich. Faithful to the classic, the sandwich shines on account of the house cured and smoked salmon. Cream cheese, tomato, red onion, capers, and black pepper are the essential supporting characters. Last but not least is the bagel, masterfully crafted in everything, sesame, salt, poppy, onion, and plain flavors. — Andrea Adleman

Bullfrog Bagels is located at 1341 H Street NE.

BACON, EGG, AND CHEESE SANDWICH AT DACHA MARKET: A lot of breakfast sandwiches try and go the fancy route, but Dacha Market understands that keeping it simple is what the first meal of the day is all about… whenever you actually eat it. They offer their excellent bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich all day. It satisfies largely through the power of its thick-cut bacon—delicious and flavorful with a melt-in-your-mouth quality. Plus the fried egg is cooked to order, which leads to just enough variety to keep things exciting. I always go for it on an everything bagel, but my colleague Christina swears by the croissant. — Rachel Kurzius

Dacha Market is located at 1602 7th St NW.

The Royal’s breakfast arepa via Facebook

BREAKFAST AREPA AT THE ROYAL: On the one hand, they put all the accouterments on top, rather than stuffed inside, which makes for a messy experience and only loosely qualifies as a sandwich (and man, do you people apparently have feelings about the open-faced trend). On the other, those toppings are exactly what I want in breakfast: fried egg, cotija cheese, avocado, and tomato. The airy bar is a nice place to stop for a minute and attempt to shovel it in your mouth as gracefully as possible, or take it to go and do that in the privacy of your own office. — Rachel Sadon

The Royal is located at 501 Florida Avenue NW.

PORK ROLL, EGG, AND CHEESE SANDWICH AT BOUNDARY STONE: The general reaction I get to my New Jersey heritage is “What exit are you from?”, but if you bozos knew anything about the Garden State, you’d learn just as much from asking about my preferred breakfast meat (plus, the added bonus of not getting socked in the face!). Boundary Stone didn’t even have to ask with its delightful pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich. That’s right, suckers—pork roll, a “pork-based processed meat” delicacy adored across the Mid-Atlantic. Other than the joy of being reunited with my true love, Taylor ham, I also appreciate that each half of this sandwich boasts its very own egg for some double yolk trouble. The only problem for me is that this offering only gets trotted out on weekends. — Rachel Kurzius

Boundary Stone is located at 116 Rhode Island Avenue NW.

Mason Dixie breakfast biscuit via Facebook

BREAKFAST BISCUITS AT MASON DIXIE: I used to think that the main selling point of the breakfast sandwich was its portability, and for this reason breakfast sandwiches have always been my go-to travel breakfast. Mason Dixie helped to change my mind. These are big sandwiches, definitely not suitable for eating without a knife and fork, but it’s worth taking the time to sit down. While I have yet to try their famous fried chicken biscuit sandwich, everything else I’ve had so far has been stellar. Mason Dixie is known for its biscuits (which are already the perfect vessel for a breakfast sandwich), but this isn’t even the main draw, as fillings are fresh and well-prepared. Braised chicken with hot sauce and honey proved to be tender, gigantic, and deeply welcome when I had it on a cold fall morning, and ham with red-eye gravy was equally sloppy and delicious. Arrive on the early side to make sure that whatever you want isn’t sold out and you’ll leave happy. — Jacob Dean

Mason Dixie Biscuit Company is located at Union Market, 1309 5th St NE.

DIY BREAKFAST SANDWICH AT FIVE GUYS: This burger joint’s claim to fame is its unlimited toppings selection. You want mushrooms? Great! Plus cheese and bacon? No problem! It took me a delayed flight out of DCA to realize that same spirit of free love also applies to their egg sandwiches. I know, I know—totally life-changing information. They’ll fry up an egg for you and load it onto a hamburger bun with all of the toppings your heart desires. I’m calling my version one of the area’s best breakfast sandwiches, but really it’s up to you whether yours will make the cut. — Rachel Kurzius

Neopol’s smoked salmon sandwich via Facebook

SMOKED SALMON SANDWICH AT NEOPOL SAVORY SMOKERY: While breakfast sandwich is often used as a synonym for bacon, egg, and cheese, Neopol Smokery disavowed me of that foolish notion. While Neopol satisfies the craving for a savory start, it does so with a decidedly fishier flavor. Sure, you could go with one of their egg salad sandwiches, but the crown jewel is their smoked salmon, and the sandwiches are anything but stingy with it. Piled high between your choice of bread with your choice of house-smoked bacon, avocado, or apple, as well as other fixings, salmon has never had a more complex flavor to it. — Rachel Kurzius

Neopol Smokery is located at Union Market, 1309 5th St NE.

SALMON BAGEL AT SO’S YOUR MOM: This beloved Adams Morgan cash-only joint is often the trump card in debates over whether D.C. has any worthy sandwich offerings. (For the record: these debates are dumb. There are a lot of good sandwiches in this town.) You really can’t go wrong when you decide to pick something up here. My personal favorite, when I’m looking to treat myself without totally breaking the bank, is getting a bagel with salmon cream cheese, avocado, and tomato. It’s like the brunch after a bar mitzvah, only you’re not shelling out double-digit prices to eat it. Then haul it to some nearby green space for a picnic from the gods. — Rachel Kurzius

So’s Your Mom is located at 1831 Columbia Road NW.

Chick-fil-A breakfast sandwich via Facebook

BACON, EGG, AND CHEESE BISCUIT AT CHICK-FIL-A: In college, students were given about $50 a month to purchase food from a student center vendor, which included Chick-fil-A, a smoothie spot, and a made-to-order sandwich place. About 80 percent of my allowance went to Chick-fil-A. Specifically, I was addicted to their bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches. The flaky, buttery biscuit is small enough for the slice of cheese to entirely cover the crispy bacon and scrambled egg. Each bite, then, is packed with enough morning goodness to make me want to jump out of bed and grab a bite before an early class, then proceed to gobble it up during a lecture. — Christina Sturdivant

Chick-fil-A is located at 3100 14th Street NW.

EGG WRAP AT BUSBOYS AND POETS: My go-to breakfast order at Andy’s house is the egg wrap. The first time I ordered it, I didn’t realize that it was meatless and the egg was, in fact, the star of dish (a vegan version comes with vegan bacon). As it turns out, though, I didn’t even miss the meat. Instead, peppers, onions, and cheese are just enough to complement the scrambled eggs, which are packed into a soft flour tortilla. And I always order home fries as my side, which makes the meal filling, but not enough to put me to sleep for the rest of the day. You can also order fruit or grits as opposed to the potatoes. It comes with pico de gallo, too—and I also add sour cream because the more condiments in life, the better. — Christina Sturdivant

Busboys And Poets has multiple locations in and around the District.
