A passengerless Metro train en route to Stadium Armory stopped on the tracks this morning above Benning Road NE. Afterward, there was “a small fire that was put out with an extinguisher,” Metro spokesperson Richard Jordan said. The reason why the train disabled is still under investigation.

Since the incident, riders on the Orange, Silver, and Blue lines have been experiencing delays as single tracking is taking place on all three lines.

Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld announced last week a massive, year-long maintenance plan for Metrorail. Commuters will see “surges” of extensive work, station closures, and the loss of extended weekend hours, among other changes detailed in the plan. Pending Metro board approval, it would go into effect on June 4.
