The gloom-iverse didn’t deter thousands from cycling on car-free streets in the inaugural D.C. Bike Ride on Sunday. Organizers counted more than 7,500 riders on the 17-mile course, which spanned two quadrants of D.C. and part of Arlington. The event was organized by Capital Sports Ventures, and part of the proceeds—almost $40,000—went to the Washington Area Cyclist Association and Vision Zero. Photographer Mark Hoelscher ably captured the sea of helmets, jerseys, and costumes that brightened up the roads. Next year, they are hoping for 10,000-12,000 riders and drier conditions.
