A cyclist is facing life-threatening injuries after a car crash in Dupont.
D.C. Fire and EMS transported the cyclist to a local hospital as a Priority 1 case, meaning life-threatening, critical injuries, according to spokesperson Oscar Mendez. The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. and units responded to the scene at the 1100 block of 19th Street NW at around 1:19 p.m.
Aquita Brown, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department, says the cyclist is an adult female. MPD is still on the scene investigating.
The status of the driver is unclear, though Mendez says DCFEMS only transported one person.
Borderstan, which first reported the incident, says that the cyclist was riding a Capital Bikeshare bike, but neither Brown nor Mendez could confirm. Capital Bikeshare tweeted that it was sending staff to the scene. A study released in March found that, at the time of publication, there were no fatalities due to a bikeshare-related crash anywhere in the U.S.
Last week, a cyclist was hit and killed in Southeast by a driver who fled before police arrived at the scene.
Today the D.C. Council today postponed a vote on a bill that would change the way bike riders and pedestrians are compensated after crashes with motorists.
