A cab hit a cyclist near Union Station this afternoon. The crash occurred around 12:45 p.m. at Columbus Circle and E Street NW, a D.C. Police spokesperson told DCist.

According to Sean Dugan, who tweeted about the accident, a 20 or 30-something-year-old black woman “was lying face down on the hot concrete while another cyclist and a police officer hovered over her,” when he passed the scene. The woman wasn’t wearing a helmet, he says.

It appeared that both the cab and the cyclist were trying to turn onto E Street when the vehicle struck the woman, Dugan says. He couldn’t tell if the woman suffered serious injuries, but saw her get carried away on a stretcher. As for the vehicles, there were marks on the cab’s passenger door and “the bike was in relatively good condition,” he says, adding that the scene has since been cleared.

The cab driver stayed at the scene, but Dungan could not verify if the driver was penalized by police. MPD did not have any information regarding the cyclist’s condition or the events leading up to, or what occurred after, the incident.

The D.C. Council took a step towards making it easier for cyclists to receive crash compensation last week.

We will update this post if we get more details.
