Does the foul stench live up to the legend? Today is the day to find out, as the corpse flower finally graces the U.S. Botanic Garden with its bright red interior and the perfume of death.
While the giant inflorescence will stay open for a day or two before flopping over, the plant really only emits a smell that has been described as “rotting overcooked cabbage” for a 6-8 hour period per bloom cycle. And it is almost always an evening show.
But D.C.’s corpse flower is in the midst of a rare daytime bloom, with peak smell expected between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. today.
Seeing as though it could be years before the treat of a “combination of garlic, fish, diapers, and rotting meat” assaults your nose again, this is it. Of course, for a milder olfactory experience, you can always go later—the USBG will also stay open until 11 p.m. today and tomorrow—or tune in via livestream.
