The opening ceremony of this year’s Summer Olympics is taking place today and District restaurants are getting their best beer, wine, and Brazilian cocktails ready for celebrations. While some bashes are one-night only, many D.C. restaurants will screen the games through August 21. Here are some places for you to cheer for Team USA in the D.C. region.
- Old Engine 12 (1626 North Capitol Street NW) is offering food and drink specials all weekend. And tomorrow, the Bloomingdale bar is airing the USA vs. France women’s soccer game at 4 p.m., the USA vs. China men’s basketball game at 6 p.m., and the USA vs. Australia women’s volleyball game at 11 p.m.
- Eatwell DC is hosting a Rio 2016 celebration at neighboring restaurants Logan Tavern (1423 P Street NW) and Commissary (1443 P Street NW) from August 5 through August 21. At Logan Tavern, happy hour is extended for the opening ceremony. And throughout the games, patrons can partake in international drinks and Brazilian food specials. Meanwhile at Commissary, fans can watch the games on a giant projector screen while sipping on Olympic-themed cocktails. And both restaurants are offering “USA swag direct from the Olympic games.”
- Ventnor Sports Cafe (2411 18th Street NW) is planning a bash on August 5 for the opening ceremony. It’ll include a special food and drink menu featuring “Olympic Rings” (avocado onions rings) and “Red-White-Blue Punch.” Throughout the games, the Adams Morgan bar will also have tons of giveaways and gear. And they promise they will be “going all out” for nights featuring swimming, gymnastics, and women’s soccer.
- Penn Social (801 E Street NW) is serving up $4 Bud Light and Miller Lite beers throughout the Olympics’ entire run. Customers at the Penn Quarter game stop can also watch the opening ceremony unfold on the big screen.
- Denizens Brewing Company (1115 East-West Highway) is screening the opening ceremony in its beer garden. Plus, the Silver Spring restaurant, founded by three women, will be airing the games in its tap room from August 6 through August 21.
- City Tap House (901 9th Street NW) will start happy hour early during the duration of the games. Customers can snag $5 select beers, $6 house wines, and a $7 shot and beer special from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Plus, the downtown gastrobub will have flights of four international beers for $10 for the opening ceremony.
- Brookland’s Finest Bar & Kitchen (3126 12th Street NE) is featuring a draft caipirinha (the national Brazilian cocktail made with cachaça, sugar, and lime) during the games.
- El Camino (108 Rhode Island Avenue NW) is also offering caipirinhas along with food specials such as Brazil’s national dish, feijoada (a bean and smoked sausage stew), pão de quejo (balls of bread filled with cheese), and pastel de carne (beef empanadas). Folks sporting any team gear will receive free chips and salsa. The opening ceremony will be showing on TVs at the bar.
- Capitol Lounge (229 Pennsylvania Avenue SE) is offering opportunities to watch and play. The Capitol Hill restaurant is screening the Olympic games, plus hosting its very own Beer Olympics featuring Jenga, cornhole, and Connect Four. The games begin at 6 p.m. on August 9, but players should arrive early to warm up (drink) before the matches. Spectators can enjoy discounted drinks all night.
- Del Frisco’s (950 I St NW, Suite 501) is hosting the “Around the World Wine Decathlon” tasting party on August 6. In honor of the summer games, the downtown steak house will feature 30 wines from 10 counties— the U.S., France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, and South Africa. Chef Scott Kroener will be prepare new private dining appetizers for pairing.
- Good Stuff Eatery (multiple locations in D.C. and Va.) is now serving its Brazilian Burger topped with Muenster cheese, sautéed onions, green peppers, tomatoes, and a basil and lemon mayo. And Chef Spike Mendelsohn recommends the limited-edition toasted coconut and fudge shake to wash it down. The items are available through August 21.
- The folks at Nellie’s Sports Bar (900 U Street NW) wants you to cheer on Team USA with them “as the flame finally makes it to the Olympic stadium” on August 5. Then they want you to come back as they’ll be screening the games through August 21.
- Ted & The Bully Bar (1200 19th Street NW) is also trying its hand at the caipirinha. Its spin-off drink includes São Paulo cachaça, ginger syrup, lemon sour, cucumber, lime, mint, soda, crushed ice, and blue curacao. The Dupont Circle bar will be showing the opening ceremony and the games on hi-def televisions, and the drink will be available through the duration of the games.
- The Royal (501 Florida Avenue NW) is screening the opening ceremony in Shaw on its large projector screen. Caipirinhas are $7 and served from 3 p.m. until close. The games will be aired through August 21 “so come by on lunch breaks, after work, you name it, the games will be on!”
