The mayor of Fairfax City will resign after his arrest last week in a sex-for-drugs sting. Richard “Scott” Silverthorne will leave his position on Thursday, according to NBC 4, and Councilman Jeff Greenfield will serve as acting mayor until further notice.

“My faith in God and myself will get me through the biggest challenge of my life,” Silverthorne told News 4. “I ask that people keep me in their prayers.”

During a drug investigation that began last month, detectives linked Silverthorne to a website used to arrange casual sexual encounters between men. After communicating through the site and text messages, police allege that Silverthorne told an undercover detective that he could provide meth in exchange for sexual encounters.

On August 4 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tysons Corner, police say Silverthorne provided the drug to undercover officers and was subsequently arrested. Police also arrested his alleged suppliers, Juan Jose Fernandez and Caustin Lee McLaughlin.

Police charged Silverthorne with the distribution of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. After taking his mug shot and signing papers at the Fairfax County Jail, he went home without having to post bail, according to The Washington Post.

Silverthorne will be arraigned on Wednesday, NBC 4 reports.
