Update: On October 18 around 3:15 pm, police arrested Kyla Jones. The 18-year-old turned herself in after learning of a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant charging her with murder two while armed, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident took place at Kansas Avenue and Emerson Street NW around 8 p.m., Lt. Derek Larson said in an email to 4th District residents. Police have identified the victim as Kaelia Minor of Northwest. The suspect stabbed Minor in the chest after a verbal altercation began on a Metrobus, Larson said.

A police spokesperson told The Washington Post that detectives believe Minor and the suspect knew each other “and were involved in a long-running dispute.” He said that police believe that the argument could have been over a cellphone.

The confrontation turned physical after the two young women were off the bus, near Sherman Circle. Minor was taken an area hospital, where she died.

Last night’s incident “is in no way connected to” three recent homicides in that area, he continued.

The suspect, who is a black teenage girl, was wearing dark pants and a denim jacket at the time of the incident, D.C. Police tweeted last night.

As of yesterday, the District has seen 109 homicides this year, according to MPD crime data.

Interm Chief Peter Newsham will be attending Thursday’s 4th District Citizens Advisory Council Meeting at 7 p.m. at 4th District Headquarters, Larsen added, “to address any concerns which you may have.”
