The District legalized cannabis under a “Home Grow, Home Use,” scheme, which means that adults over the age of 21 can cultivate up to three mature weed plants. Renters, however, remain at the mercy of their landlords.

Sure, Craigslist group housing ads will often include the phrase “420 friendly” if roomies can light up inside. But it can be harder for people looking for, say, a one-bedroom apartment that offers a place for the complicated process of weed cultivation . With an already brutal rental market, potential tenants are often wary of bringing up the subject.

Now, 420 Friendly Housing In DC is trying to help by “looking for landlords to match up with individuals looking for housing in the District of Columbia.”

The Facebook group, first reported by NBC4, already has upwards of 200 members, all of whom need to request to join.

One of the group’s founders, Jamie Edelman, explained to NBC how it worked. “They’ll say, ‘OK, well, we’re looking for a place. We want a two-bedroom with a basement for growing.’ We’ll go into our database and we’ll find the criteria that they’re looking for,” he said.

We’ve reached out to Edelman and will update if he gets back to us.

D.C.’s “Home Grow, Home Use” has helped create a cottage industry of services that offer to install and maintain plants, or teach people how they can do it. As Urban Turf noted, one condo developer included a grow closet as an amenity for one of its units.

420 Friendly Housing In DC not the first group on the social network for the city’s bud enthusiasts. On Washington DC Recreational Marijuana, members post photos of their plants, solicit growing advice, and talk about local weed culture.
