Update: This pop-up has been extended until the end of January. The new hours will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday through Sunday.

D.C.’s coffee options have been on the rise lately, with businesses like Compass Coffee and Qualia upping the quality on morning caffeine runs. One of the newest entrants to the scene is Lost Sock roasters, founded in 2015 by Nico Cabrera and Jeff Yerxa, who met as students at American University.

If Lost Sock doesn’t sound familiar, it’s because they’ve been largely a wholesale business to this point. But the local roaster is now making the leap into the retail world. It’s partnering with Timber Pizza (809 Upshur St. NW) on a new part-time, morning pop-up through the month of December.

“Right now we depend on people to brew our coffee correctly,” Cabrera says. “So this just gives us a chance to brew it ourselves and focus on the experience of a customer getting a cup of coffee instead of just the beans.”

The pop-up will run Thursdays through Sundays during December from around 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. It will include specialty drinks, 100% Arabica single-origin pour over coffees and even a cascara tea (made from dried skins of coffee cherries).

Timber Pizza will be providing the breakfast bites. That’ll include wood-fired bagels for $4 and breakfast empanadas in options like egg, cheese and bacon or egg, cheese and spicy sweet potato fritter. Orders are three for $6 or six for $10.

Lost Sock sees the pop-up is an opportunity differentiate itself from its peers.

“We’re focused on mostly light to medium roasts. Extremely high-quality coffee.” Cabrera says. “That way we can showcase different flavors of the bean.”

Both Cabrera and Yerxa will be on hand to serve coffee and educate customers on their product and get their new brews into mugs around the city.

Lost Sock Roasters is popping up at Timber Pizza (809 Upshur St. NW) in December, Thursdays through Sundays, from 7 a.m.-12 p.m.
