A D.C. non-profit is once again encouraging locals to not drive after drinking during the holiday season by offering free cab rides.
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) began offering its annual Holiday SoberRide service on December 16 and it runs through January 1. After hitting the bar, intoxicated people can request rides from local taxi companies between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. by calling 1-800-200-TAXI. Riders must be at least 21 years old, and trips are free up to $30.
Last Christmas, 37 percent of the country’s traffic fatalities involved drunk drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Nearly 1,500 people participated in the SoberRide program last December, said WRAP president Kurt Gregory Erickson in a release. Ridership on New Year’s Eve peaked at 580.
The service is available in the District, as well as Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland, and Arlington, Fairfax, (eastern) Loudoun, and Prince William counties in Northern Virginia.
