As protests have erupted across the city, Interim D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham spoke to a reporter around 8:30 a.m. this morning about law enforcement’s outlook on Inauguration Day.

“I’m talking to officers from all over the country, they’re actually very excited to be here—excited to be a part of history,” Newsham said, as he stood along the inauguration parade route. Even officers from Florida and Texas who work in warmer climates aren’t complaining, he continued.

Newsham was named interim chief in August. This is his seventh inauguration as an officer.

“There are going to be some demonstrators here—we’re used to that in Washington, D.C.,” he said, acknowledging that demonstrator activity has already begun.

Protesters clashed with police at several security checkpoints this morning, chaining themselves to fences and linking arms to block the entrance.

And last night, flood of protesters assembled at the site of a pro-Trump ball last night, turning much of F Street into a chaotic scene amid skirmishes with both police officers and Deploraball attendees.

Up until that point, Newsham said, there had only been one arrest due to inaugural activities. But when it comes to breaking the law, he continued, “it’s not something that we tolerate in Washington, D.C.”
