Mayor Muriel Bowser spoke from the main stage at the Women’s March on Washington this morning to let the crowd know that D.C. “has a chick mayor” who was there to speak on behalf of all female elected officials.
“We are more harshly criticized, we are more frequently criticized, and we are more wrongly criticized at every single level,” she said. Women need “every woman and every man to speak up for us, too.”
In Bowser’s short speech, she also educated her audience about D.C.’s fight for statehood. The city is 680,000 people strong, she said, “yet we don’t have a single vote in that Capitol building and that injustice must end.”
“Year to year, they tell use we can’t use our own money to support low income women and their healthcare—and now they want to make it permanent,” she continued, referring to a bill from a New Jersey representative that would permanently block D.C. from spending local tax dollars on abortion funding (currently Congress accomplishes this through annual riders).
“You tell them to leave us alone,” Bowser shouted, when it comes to issues like public education, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, the environment, and more.
“Leave us alone! Leave us alone!” the crowd chanted back at the mayor.
