Area trumpeter DeAndre Shaifer plays Alice’s Jazz & Cultural Society. 6 p.m. $5 at the door.

Performing as SaltmanKnowles, pianist Mark Saltman and bassist William Knowles play the Millennium Stage to celebrate their new release, Almost. 6 p.m. Free.

The legendary jazz guitarist, Pat Metheny, brings his new quartet to the Music Center at Strathmore for an 8 p.m. show. Joining Metheny will be his long-time drummer Antonio Sanchez, bassist Linda Oh, and British pianist Gwilym Simcock. Tickets $45-$85.

Nistha Raj is a local violinist who specializes in the classical Hindustani music of North India. She is launching the DC Raga Jam, a gathering place for musicians and appreciators who are interested in traditional South Asian sounds. The event will take place the last Wednesday of every month at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 8 p.m. No cover.

Paul Remund is an experimental composer from New York City. Remund creates complex sonic experience through the use of digital technology non-traditional instrumentation. He performs at 8 p.m. at Rhizome. $7 at the door.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 27

Bassist Wes Biles leads a band at Jazz Night in Southwest that features special guest vocalist Gail Shipp. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Experimental drummer Jeff Cosgrove and his trio will be part of a bill at Rhizome that will explore the intersection between avant-garde sounds, movement, and theater. 8 p.m. $10 suggested donation.

Chaise Lounge performs a style of sophisticated yet easy going jazz that was epitomized by releases on Capitol Records in the early ’60s, and which was commonly heard in coffee shops on every college campus before social upheaval changed things. The band plays an 8 p.m. show at AMP to celebrate its new release, The Lock & The Key. Tickets $25-$35.

Nearly 5 years have passed since the Godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown, died, but his legacy continues with his band. The ensemble still performs and will do so at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club. 8 p.m. Tickets $25 plus minimum and surcharge.

The Passport to the World concert series continues at Creative Cauldron in Falls Church with a performance from the Dave Kline Band. The group blends jazz fusion with international influences. 7:30 p.m. Tickets $15-$100.

Sonic Circuits presents an evening of experimental music at Rhizome that includes Max Eilbacher, Headband, and others. 8 p.m. $10 at the door.

Innovating is hard in a genre as traditional as the blues, but that’s exactly what James “Blood” Ulmer has done over his 50 year career. The pioneering guitarist will be at AMP for an 8 p.m. show. Tickets $30-$40.

Kennedy Center Artistic Director for Jazz Jason Moran shares the stage at the venue’s Crossroads Club with Los Angeles-born emcee, singer-songwriter, and producer Georgia Anne Muldrow, aka Jyoti. The pair will co-lead a group in tribute to the late jazz legend, Charles Mingus. 8 p.m. Tickets $30.

Veteran area trombonist Reginald Cyntje brings his band to Alice’s Jazz & Cultural Society. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Anacostia Delta: Home of the World’s Great “Unknown” Guitarists is a forthcoming documentary about D.C. guitarists Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan. On Sunday, Creative Cauldron will host a “storytellers” style concert featuring four of the area’s best axe wielders, including Dave Chappell, Anthony Pirog, John Previti, and Barry Hart, who all appear in the film. 7 p.m. Tickets $15-$100.
