The controversial mural depicting Bill Cosby on the side of Ben’s Chili Bowl has been painted over with white, in a move that the historic restaurant is calling “New Year, New Mural.”

“The mural alongside Ben’s was painted in 2012,” the Ben’s Chili Bowl website says, as first noted by Popville. “Now, after 5 years of braving the elements, its time to refresh and repaint the mural and we want your input!”

The painting by Aniekan Udofia originally featured Bill Cosby, a longtime friend of the restaurant, alongside President Barack Obama, Go-Go Godfather Chuck Brown, and radio’s Donnie Simpson.

Cosby’s gleaming face on U Street took on a creepy new meaning as more allegations of his sexual assault became public, and Washingtonians began to debate whether the mural should come down. One artist replaced Cosby’s visage with Kim Jong-un’s face, which another artist then ripped off.

The Ali family, who own Ben’s Chili Bowl, has publicly refused to rescind their offer of free food for Cosby, despite accusations from dozens of women over a decades that he drugged and raped them.

Cosby is on the list of more than 50 nominees for the next mural, alongside the Ben and Virginia Ali, Muriel Bowser, Ludacris, Jimmy Fallon, Simone Biles, Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, and others.
