A North Carolina man who stands accused of shooting an assault weapon inside a D.C. pizza shop has reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors, the Associated Press reports.
28-year-old Edgar Madison Welch walked into Comet Ping Pong in upper Northwest on December 4 with an AR-15, motivated by online rumors that “the Comet restaurant was harboring child sex slaves and that he wanted to see for himself if they were there … [He] stated he was armed to help rescue them,” he told D.C. Police.
Welch fired the weapon three times inside the Chevy Chase pizzeria, which had been beset by harassment and threats since before the 2016 election, ever since an unproven conspiracy connected Hillary Clinton to a child sex ring allegedly operating out of the restaurant’s basement. MPD defined it as a “fictitious online conspiracy theory.” Comet Ping Pong, for one, has no basement.
A federal complaint outlined how Welch texted a friend, saying he was headed to D.C. from his home in North Carolina. He said he would be “Raiding a pedo ring, possibly sacraficing [sic] the lives of a few for the lives of many.”
However, after clearing the restaurant with his gun shots, when he went to “self-investigate” the so-called Pizzagate claims he learned about online, he was not able to find any evidence. That’s when he gave himself up to police,
In a New York Times interview, Welch said that he “wanted to do some good and went about it the wrong way.” No one was injured in the shooting.
A grand jury indicted Welch with the federal charge of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition, and with two D.C. laws—assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.
Now, Welch is expected to plead guilty in court during a plea hearing on March 24. Terms of the plea were not discussed, according to AP.
