Just a couple of months after arriving in D.C., New York City’s The Smith is already on the move to grow its footprint in the District. The restaurant plans to bring its upscale American fare and energetic vibe to a new development at 13th and U St. NW.

A liquor license application filed with the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration calls for a 216-seat restaurant at at 1314 U St. NW. A spokesperson for The Smith confirmed the project to DCist but was unable to provide further details.

The Smith opened its first D.C. location (and first outside of New York City) in Penn Quarter (901 F St. NW) in January. That location’s lengthy menu includes everything from seafood platters ($70 to $115) to burgers ($17-$19), entrees ($26-$25), and bar snacks like crab cake tots ($13). The Smith also offers lunch and a popular brunch (although it’s not bottomless).

The U St. address is part of a substantial mixed-use project—including 129 apartments and a new Rite Aid—on the 1300 block of U St. NW that broke ground in 2015. The site is being overseen by JBG properties, which is also behind other shiny properties in the neighborhood, including Atlantic Plumbing and Louis at 14th and U.

The Smith one of several New York City restaurants breaking into the D.C. market recently. Earlier this month news broke that Manhattan’s Union Square Cafe will anchor the Capitol Crossing project at 200 Massachusetts Ave. NW.
