In another incident involving ducklings separated from their mom, D.C. officials rescued eight small ducks that fell into a storm drain in Southwest on Monday evening.

The ducklings’ mom stood by as officials worked to remove the drain cover at 12th Street and Maine Avenue.

The rescue took about 45 minutes to complete, according to D.C. Fire and EMS spokesperson Vito Maggiolo, adding that traffic was largely unaffected in the area. It was a joint effort by members of D.C. Fire and EMS, Animal Control, D.C. Water, and the Metropolitan Police Department.

In a video posted to Twitter by the fire department, an animal control officer is seen using a long pole and net to pull the ducks up to street level and place them into a cage.

Eventually, all of the birds were recovered and waddled away with their mom.
