The Humane Rescue Alliance’s shelter on New York Avenue NE sits at the bottom of a hill, so when it rains, the adoption center can get pretty wet.
Friday’s downpour was no exception, and the heavy rains led to flooding. While the mess has since been cleaned up and no animals were harmed, the animal welfare organization did have to throw out its bedding. On Saturday, they put out the call for towels, sheets, and blankets to replace what was lost.
D.C. did not refuse the call.
A day later, Humane Rescue Alliance posted photos showing towers of bedding, along with toys for the animals. “We were overwhelmed with the donations—it was great,” says Matt Williams, spokesperson for the organization. “We are all set and then some.”
In addition to requesting bedding, HRA also suggested that people could help clear out the crowded shelter by taking some animals home with them. At least some folks have obliged.
“We did have a good adoptions weekend,” says Williams, though he didn’t have numbers to compare it to other weekends. Still, though, there are many more cats and dogs looking for homes.
“We have great animals for adoption and we’re pretty full right now, so we would encourage people to come,” he says.
