A few months after Politics and Prose announced it would expand to a second location by Union Market, the longtime bookstore is making it three with a location at The Wharf, the forthcoming massive development along the Southwest waterfront.

The new bookstore is slated to open on October 12, the day of the The Wharf’s big opening bash. Other events that day include a Foo Fighters concert to inaugurate concert venue The Anthem (one of four places to see live music at the development) , though presumably it’ll be easier to get into the Politics and Prose opening. The $2.5 billion mixed-use development also includes retail, nearly 20 local restaurants, and more in a bid to make the 27-acre spot D.C.’s next hip neighborhood.

“We’re very excited to be expanding into Southwest D.C., an increasingly dynamic part of the city that has been woefully lacking in bookstores,” said Bradley Graham, the store’s co-owner, in a statement.

Politics and Prose will take up more than 2,300 square feet at what developer Hoffman-Madison Waterfront is calling District Square, and host a variety of events. MSNBC host Chris Matthews and cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy are among those already booked when it opens.

Graham and his wife Lissa Muscatine purchased the store in 2010 from its original owners Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade, who founded it in 1984.

Politics and Prose had been managing the book sections at multiple Busboys and Poets since 2014, but the restaurant recently returned to operating them in-house.

In addition to planning the expansion to a total of three quadrants of the city, Politics and Prose renovated the cafe at its flagship location on Connecticut Avenue NW last year. The Union Market location will open later in the fall, according to the bookstore.

This the second announcement of a new bookstore in as many weeks, after former managers at Kramerbooks signed a lease to open Solid State Books on H St NE.
