Wrap up August with a cocktail bar birthday, a new upscale diner, the return of a favorite Maryland eatery, and much more in the coming week of eating and drinking.

This week’s food events

Brunch with a side of art

The National Gallery of Art (6th and Constitution Ave. NW) has launched a limited-time bottomless brunch with a side of artistic sophistication in its Garden Cafe. The $30 buffet (add $10 for unlimited mimosas are available for $6 each) is available through the month of September and features dishes like buttermilk pancakes, baked egg frittata, cheese and charcuterie, barbecue short rib, and lots more. Hours are Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. It looks to be a weekend hit considering the dearth of food options on the National Mall.

Two birds, four years

Subterranean cocktail bar 2 Birds 1 Stone (1800 14th St. NW) is turning four this week and throwing a celebration bash on Monday, August 28. Come down from 7 p.m. to midnight and sip on $6 punches, blender, and siphon drinks with the crew. The bar is also encouraging partiers to wear their finest cat t-shirts.

Last call for Honeycomb

Erik Bruner-Yang’s Union Market (1309 5th St. NE) shop Honeycomb will sell its last batch of Asian groceries at the end of August. The space’s lease is up, and Yang is closing to focus on his Paper Horse ramen concept, which is currently serving up bowls of noodles at the H St. Whole Foods (600 H St. NE).

A $13 happy hour deal

Restaurant Week is over, so EatWellDC restaurants—The Pig, The Bird, Commissary, Logan Tavern, Grillfish—are introducing “happy hour week” through Thursday, August 31. Each restaurant will offer a different $13 menu that includes two cocktails and a small plate during its happy hour. Options include everything from a fried chicken sandwich to a “big ass” pretzel to eat and daiquiris and old fashioneds to drink. See restaurant websites for full details.

Short eats and strong coffee

The Sri Lankan breakfast chefs at Short Eats will be at local roaster Qualia Coffee (Eckington Pl. NE at Harry Thomas Way NE) in Eckington this Sunday, August 27 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. So if you haven’t been able to get to their pop-up at Ten Tigers Parlour in Petworth, you can swing by to experience a tasty grilled roti. The handheld breakfasts come in a flaky pastry filled with spiced meats or veggies and egg.

Openings:

After several years and much anticipation, Addie’s (12435 Park Potomac Ave., Potomac) finally reopened for business in Maryland this week. The restaurant comes from the ownership behind Pearl Dive Oyster Palace, Blacksalt, and Republic. Addie’s first opened in 1995 before closing in 2013 to look for a larger space. Expect a menu stocked with fresh seafood like mussels and seafood towers as well as some classic comfort dishes and vegan options, too.

A second location of Silver, the upscale brother of Silver Diner, is slated to open at 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 29 at 3404 Wisconsin Ave. NW. The menu consists of American favorites and classed-up diner staples like burgers, crustless chicken pot pie, salads, and appetizers like chimichurri chicken wings. There’s also a selection of milkshakes (including boozy ones) and a full bar. Silver will be open daily for breakfast and have brunch on weekends.

Hoagie chain Taylor Gourmet opened its latest shop this week, this time at 1259 First St. SE D.C.’s Navy Yard neighborhood. It marks the local businesses’ 14 location. Stop by daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for all your sandwich needs. It’s also ideal for a quick fill-up before Nationals games.

Plan ahead

Extra drinking hours

On holiday weekends, local bars and restaurants can apply to stay open later. More than 150 institutions have won approval from the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration to stay open as late as 4 a.m. over the course of labor day weekend.

All you can handle pizza

Pizza lovers should pencil in an upcoming pie extravaganza at the MGM casino at National Harbor (101 MGM Ave). The grand casino is hosting “Pizzapalooza” on Sept. 10 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. with food from Bryan Voltaggio and renowned pizza makers representing styles from New York to Chicago. Tickets are $100 and buy unlimited pizza and beverages (think Italian beers and wines) for the duration of the event. Full details are available here.
