Police are searching for a suspect who fatally shot a teenager outside of her home on Saturday. The person also wounded two others in the shooting that took place around 7 p.m. in Congress Heights.
When officials arrived in the 1500 block of Tubman Road SE, they found 19-year-old Unique Davis unconscious, unresponsive, and displaying “no signs consistent with life,” according to a D.C. police release. Davis’ body was taken to the medical examiner’s office.
Relatives told The Washington Post that they’d celebrated Davis’ birthday just a day earlier. They said she graduated from Anacostia High School last year and had plans to work and attend college.
Police also found two wounded victims at the scene who suffered from non life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital.
Devinah Davis, Unique’s aunt and godmother, told The Post that the other victims were her niece’s boyfriend and sister who held her and “watched her take her last breath.” They were all socializing in front of the house when the shooting happened.
Officers have not released a description of the suspect, who fired a rifle in the shooting, according to a police report.
“Justice needs to be served,” said Davena Davis, adding that her niece did not deserve to be killed. “The shooters need to pay the price. They didn’t just take a child, they took our hearts. . . . They need to suffer in hell for what they did to her.”
Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White spoke before dozens of people at a vigil for Davis on Sunday. “You can’t even sit on your porch in peace no more. We must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or we’re going to perish together as fools,” White said.

Her death took place less than a month after another college-bound teen Jamahri Sydnor was fatally shot in Northeast. Police said Sydnor was driving a car when two shooters, who were hiding behind bushes, opened fire at a crowd of people across the street. Officials have arrested one person in that case.
