A D.C. police officer died in a crash on Monday morning after his car crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic on a Howard County road.
Police say 31-year-old Barry Martin Eastman, of Ellicott City, Md. was traveling northbound on Route 32 in Clarksville when he drove into oncoming traffic“for an unknown reason”and struck a tractor trailer that was traveling in the southbound direction, according to a Howard County Police Department release.
Officials pronounced Eastman, a four-year Metropolitan Police Department veteran, dead at the scene.
The crash took place around 8 a.m. D.C. police told WTOP that Eastman was driving home after finishing a shift earlier that morning. He was assigned to the Third District.
D.C. police released a statement asking people to keep Eastman’s family and friends “in your thoughts and prayers.”
The truck driver, 53-year-old Ira Goldberg, was not injured. The case remains under investigation.
