MuralsDC has installed a new mural in Ward 4 and will put in place seven more around around the District over the next few weeks.
Federico Frum, an internationally recognized graffiti artist who goes by Maz Paz, completed the first work at the West Education Campus late last week. The others will be painted at sites in wards 1, 3, and 5 throughout August and September (see the map below for the exact addresses and the artists behind each work).
Now in its 11th year, MuralsDC is a collaboration between the Department of Public Works and the Commission on the Arts and Humanities aimed at preventing graffiti. The program has been responsible for nearly 80 murals around the city, though a handful of them have since been taken down. Once this summer’s round of new works are painted, a total of 70 will be visible.
“The MuralsDC program is an effective tool for preventing graffiti vandalism and a great way to support and sustain our city’s vibrant arts culture,” DPW Director Christopher Shorter said in a release. “We make sure that every mural captures the energy of the neighborhood it lives in and look forward to unveiling the new visual representations of our city and its history over the coming weeks.”
Here’s where they popped up in recent years: 2017, 2016, and 2015.
