When I say “giant,” I mean giant.
National Ice Cream day is this Sunday, and local sweet shop, Ice Cream Jubilee, says it is trying to set a local record for the longest ice cream sundae in D.C. The plan is for it to be somewhere between 40 and 150 feet (they’re aiming for 100 feet), depending on how many people show up.
Two hundred free, online tickets are sold out. But the first 40 people to line up will receive a free ticket, and $6 general admission tickets are still available, according to founder Ice Cream Jubilee founder Victoria Lai. They’re expecting up to 300 people eating a giant ice cream sundae at the same time.
To accommodate the space at Yards Park, Lai explains that the tables they’ve rented may turn into “a sundae U-turn” rather than a straight line. She says to expect the brand’s signature flavors—vegan passion fruit guava sorbet and sweet cream and honey. The event also brags about “generous sundae toppings” and “summer games and music.”
It’s co-sponsored by Yards Park, and Lai says that there will be lawn chairs, beanbags, picnic table, and more for folks to enjoy the event.
She says that they’re going to have to move fast on Sunday to coordinate all the folks who show up. It’ll especially be a challenge in this weather—D.C.’s in the middle of a heat wave, and the temperature is supposed to reach 98 degrees on Sunday.
The official world record for longest ice cream sundae is 1386.62 meters—nearly a mile long—per Guinness. But Lai did some research and couldn’t find any local occurrences (and there technically isn’t an official D.C. record).
“I don’t think anyone has attempted this before,” says Lai. “But I’m excited.”
The event takes place Sunday, July 21 at 301 Water Street SE, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
